Why classic style isn’t always boring
I recently talked about the case for simple clothing. I think a lot of people overthink simple outfits and therefore consider their style boring. That’s why I think a lot of people will stay away from the classics because they’re worried they’ll get booed. I’m here to (respectfully) tell you that you’re wrong. There are many ways to interpret classic style outfits and make them your own!
Think of it this way – everything you wear won’t look amazing. Let those special purchases shine – we don’t need to see them all at once. I’m a firm believer that a good closet should have more everyday items in it than just the special ones. But what makes a great outfit? When those special pieces blend seamlessly into your classic style. That’s the personal style I’m really after.
The five pieces in this article remain the foundation of my (fall) classic closet.
Classic Style Clothing
Over the years I’ve come to realize that my closet is usually full of clothes that I don’t wear. Now, when I look through my closet, I know I’ll be able to find just the right outfit. Whether it’s something I’ve worn a million times or a piece I’m mixing and matching (i.e. new vs. old), I really don’t have to worry about being late because I can’t find something to wear.
When I think of classic style outfit ideas, I don’t always think “oh, timeless clothes.” While that’s only part of it, I primarily think of classic style as a combination of ways to dress. I think there’s a difference between timeless pieces and classic style. But they do go hand in hand.
My take on classic style clothing:
Neutrals as a base (easier to add pops of color)
Traditional prints and stripes
Simple silhouettes and tailored pieces
When it comes to “mastering” classic style clothing, don’t think the word “investment” means spending $1000 on a cashmere sweater. All you need to do is invest in a well-made piece that fits well and lasts. Once you’ve invested in this type of piece, it’s much easier to create classic styles.
The outfits I wore in this post are full of simple pieces that I can wear in many different ways and can be paired with so many other things in my closet. Buttons that are too big feel like they came from your dad’s closet? Classic. Leopard print ballet flats? Also classic. And the red cashmere sweater? Don’t get me started.
That’s my definition of classic style. And I don’t think it’s boring, right?
