The Art of Layering: Enhancing Your Seasonal Outfits
Layering men’s clothing can create stylish and versatile outfits. Here are some tips to keep in mind:
- Start with a base layer: Start with a fitted base layer, such as a plain T-shirt or lightweight sweater. Any heavy logos will make the look too fussy. A simple t-shirt can also provide a comfortable base for additional layers. I always try to match the base layer to my eye color, especially with crew neck tees, as it helps to enhance the eye and coordinate the look.
- Mix textures: Combine different textures and fabrics for visual interest. If you start overdoing it by pairing one piece of clothing with another, it will start to look like loungewear or you’re just out walking the dog in your pajamas. Pair chunky knits with smoother fabrics or denim with softer fabrics.
- Consider proportions: layer shorter clothes over longer ones for a balanced look. I still recommend tucking base layers into pants or wearing them half-and-half with a base shirt. Overflowing ore layers will become more confusing. Longer shirts paired with shorter jackets can create a well-proportioned outfit.
- Experiment with patterns and colors: Try experimenting with patterns and colors, but keep a consistent palette to avoid looking like a car wreck in a paintball parking lot. Perhaps some familiarity with the color wheel is in order; Carole Jackson’s Colors for Men is the bible on the subject.
