High heels are painful, and other common misconceptions about fashion
People say the strangest things. When it comes to the wonderful world of fashion, sometimes the things people say aren’t true: or not always, anyway.
I think it’s time to clear some things up, here are some common misconceptions about fashion ……
High heels are painful and no one can really walk in them
For people who don’t wear high heels, it’s almost impossible to understand how on earth anyone could walk in them. For these people, heels are just a form of torture, and anyone who claims to be comfortable in them is flat out lying. “I can’t believe she wore those all day,” they say. “She must have flats in her bag or something, because no one can walk around in flats all day without being crippled!”
Sure, some heels are truly painful, and not everyone can (or should) wear them. However, not all heels are uncomfortable, and no one can walk in them with ease. Not everyone has the same lifestyle or comfort level. Just because you may find a particular pair of shoes difficult to walk in, doesn’t mean that others may not be able to wear them as well. In fact, for women who wear high heels regularly, it has become second nature to wear them and they are as comfortable as wearing flats. This is not to say that all heels are suitable for everyone in all situations: obviously not. But it also doesn’t mean that all heels are uncomfortable.
Sunglasses are only for summer: people who wear them at other times are vain
Why do so many people think sunglasses are “warm weather only”? The clue is in the name: they’re sunglasses, not heated ones, and they can be sunny any time of year, even in the coldest climates. (In fact, in the frigid north, where Schopper is headquartered, the low winter sun is brighter and more dangerous than the summer sun, hence the need for sunglasses in winter.) As for the accusation of “futility”, well, I’m sure some people wear sunglasses purely because they think they look good, but that’s true for most fashion accessories, and for everyone who “poses” in sunglasses, there are others who are sensitive to the sun, or perhaps just to themselves. There are also people who are sensitive to the sun, or perhaps just very concerned about their appearance.
Dresses are more complicated and uncomfortable than other clothes
If you’re a formal dresser, you’ve probably heard this a lot. “Why are you dressed up like that?” , followed by, “Oh, I’m just too lazy to wear a dress every day!” This totally baffles me, because unless you’re wearing a dress with some kind of old-fashioned lace-up bodice (or a dress that’s a couple sizes too small), dresses aren’t really that “hard” to wear any more than a pair of jeans, for example! In fact, many dress fans are tempted to wear dresses that are a few sizes too small. In fact, many dress aficionados would argue that the opposite is true: nothing is easier or more comfortable than a simple dress!
Skinny jeans are only for skinny people
We’ve said it before, but “skinny” here refers to the cut of the legs, not the size of the wearer. You don’t have to be skinny to wear skinny jeans: just make sure you’re wearing the right size and that they flatter your body shape – no matter what the size.
Any other weird misconceptions you’d like to add to this list?
